Join us for Art Journaling on Monday
I'll be hosting the regular, Messy Mondays art journaling session on Monday, August 5 between 10 am and noon. (I know it is a stat holiday here in BC, but a few people have already said they'd like to attend so we'll go ahead as usual!)
If you've never tried art journaling, there are loads of options and approaches but almost everyone who has tried it gets hooked on their own form of creative expression! I have included some different images and explanations below that I hope will get you inspired.
In this image above, I used a mix of stencils, stamped images and washi tape to create layers of colour that reflected the concept of this pensive-looking wanderer! The girl on the suitcase is a stamped image that I created on cardstock, coloured in, and then cut out and glued onto the background page.
At Messy Mondays, I provide the supplies and some inspiration, but you get to create in the format and structure that you are interested in. Unlike the regular monthly card workshops, these sessions are not step-by-step "how-to" programs. Instead, you will have some samples to look at and then I will demo some techniques that will allow you to quickly get started and "do your own thing."
I've included a few more images below from one of my in-progress journals with some notes for each of them to get you inspired!
For those who know me, you know that I am not an experienced sketcher. This page uses what we call "collage papers" (aka "napkins" to the rest of the world) that have images such as this lady, which we then adhere to the prepared background. When the glue interacts with the napkin layer, the image appears to have been hand-drawn onto the page. So, no drawing is required!
The flowers and the words on this page are all created using stamped images.
This page is a bit more whimsical and includes layers of ink colours topped off with some additional stencilled contours.
The message, "You may not have lost all your marbles but there's definitely a hole in the bag," was created using a stamp applied to coloured paper backgrounds and then cut up into phrases and applied to the page.
Inspiration for page designs come from many places. The one above started with the stamped image and then I looked for designs and colours that seemed to support that theme.
For this design here, I took inspiration from a t-shirt a participant was wearing to create the background colouring and design. I then stamped the lady image onto cardstock, coloured her in, and added a paper-pieced hat to top it off.
Since the message I wanted to include was about "happiness," I then scoured some magazines for "happy" words and cut them out and applied them to the page.
This page is still a work-in-progress, since I've only created the background so far.
A friend forwarded me an email newsletter and I took inspiration from the colours and structure of an image that was included there.
As with many of the other pages presented here, this background is created by applying ink both directly on the page and then layered on top through stencils.
No previous experience is necessary to join the art journaling sessions. You will be pleasantly surprised how quickly you can create a fabulous page. Some people add text journaling to their pages, other let the artwork speak for itself. I have some journals where I have left room to write, and others where I don't add any hand-written text. The beauty of the art journal format is that "it is all up to you" - there are no rules!
If you'd like to join us on Monday, please email me to save a spot. If Monday morning doesn't work and you would prefer another time, just let me know and I'd be happy to book another session.
Hope to see you there!
Happy crafting.
